Syyspohja's Salpalinja
Syyspohja's Salpalinja
Syyspohjan Salpalinja – Historical Defense Line
Experience a piece of Finland's most significant architectural history as a defense for the eastern border!
The Salpalinja is a massive defense line built in the 1940s, immediately after the end of the Winter War, that stretches all the way from the Gulf of Finland to Salla. Although the line was fortunately never used in actual combat, it was the largest construction project of its time and its existence served as a significant deterrent. Today it is a magnificent and calming historical site.
What can you see in the Syyspohja area? In Syyspohja in Ruokolahti, a diverse range of Salpalinja structures can be seen in a small and compact area. The area has also been designated an official Saimaa Geopark site.
-
Ditches and trenches: The area contains completed fortifications, such as accommodation dugouts, as well as dugouts that have collapsed and are unfinished. The terrain also shows water-filled trenches and trenches.
-
Massive stone obstacles: In Syyspohja, you can walk along an anti-tank obstacle line built of massive stones weighing up to three tons. The stones were once quarried for the line from the nearby Haukkavuori cliff.
