Imatrankoski
Imatrankoski
Imatrankoski is a magnificent, true historical gem. Since the 18th century, European artists, the nobility and the Russian Empress Catherine II have been marveling at the rapids. Although the rapids were harnessed to produce hydroelectric power in the 1920s, its huge and deep rock bed is a very impressive and calming sight even when dry.
However, in the summer, the rapids awaken to their full glory during festive rapids shows. When the dam gates open, the free-flowing masses of water plunge into the bed to the rhythm of either Sibelius' Karelia series or a melodious rock symphony. The rapids are also surrounded by Finland's oldest nature reserve, Kruununpuisto. On its atmospheric paths you can sense the charm of the past and enjoy the magnificent views in complete peace.
